Nearly a hundred years ago, Newton D. Baker founded Cleveland College. Focused exclusively on adult continuing education, it represented his deeply held conviction that such education can remedy a wide variety of social ills. His vision, eloquently expressed, attracted not only financial backers but also energetic volunteers. Over seven decades, ACE and its precursors have supported continuing education in Cleveland by organizing volunteer activities. From an educational viewpoint, the individual who left the strongest personal imprint on our organization was Grazella Shepherd, whose enduring contributions are detailed in History. We have worked in a series of affiliations - with Cleveland College, WRU and currently, CWRU. In addition, since 2012 we have actively collaborated with the Siegal Lifelong Learning program at CWRU. Current activities, including the annual ACE/CWRU Book Sale are described in the menus above.
We hold fast to our conviction that reliable knowledge, widely shared, is essential for a functioning democracy. Over many decades, we have demonstrated that volunteers can play an important role in the sharing process. Newton D. Baker and Grazella Shepherd made Cleveland a leader in continuing education, giving us an enviable base on which to innovate and build further. There is much to look forward to as we continue to engage a community of inquisitive minds. Please join us!
