Book Discussion  Day

Book Discussion Day has been postponed.

Below is a description of the event when it is rescheduled:

The morning begins with small discussion groups led by Book Discussion Day Committee members, followed by lunch, the speaker’s presentation and Q&A.  This year we will be discussing “On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous”, by Vietnamese-American poet, Ocean Vuong.  The author, a graduate of Brooklyn College and New York University, received a MacArthur Genius Award in 2019, and currently teaches at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

The speaker will be John McBratney, Professor of English at John Carrol University. He spent three and a half years in Thailand with the Peace Corps and has traveled widely, including Vietnam.  Given his cross-cultural experiences, he “has some small sense of the cultural dislocation that afflicts the narrator and characters” in the novel.  Dr. Bratney received his BA from Dartmouth College and his MA and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkley. He has taught at John Carrol for over thirty years.
